The relation between agriculture, soil and food security is a compelling and timely subject that underscores the critical role of biofertilizers in promoting sustainable agriculture and addressing the global challenges amplified by climate change. The communication highlights the importance of adopting eco-friendly and innovative agricultural practices that harness the power of nature to enhance soil fertility and crop productivity and underscores the essential role of biofertilizers in fostering more sustainable and resilient agricultural systems. For which it is emphasized the need for a holistic approach that combines scientific knowledge, innovative technologies, and policy support to promote the use of biofertilizers and advance global food security while safeguarding the environment. The concept is supported by several field assays using tomato and maize where a 30% reduction in the recommended dose of fertilizer combined with the use of a biofertilizer resulted in a 10-15% yield increment, and in an improvement of soil quality and system sustainability. Data on plant biomass, fruit yield and composition, nutrient use efficiency based on carbon and nitrogen stable isotope signatures, nutrient turnover based on soil extracellular enzyme activities, microbial activity based on soil respiration and other parameters clearly showed the effect and the legacy of using biofertilizers on soil functionality.
