The ClimRisk group aims to develop knowledge, solutions and applications that respond to the challenges of global change, and to the impacts of increasing warming levels and climate extremes on socio-ecological systems.

ClimRisk’s three main objectives include:

  1. Advance the understanding and modelling of key natural, human and social processes that shape the management of climate risks across space and time. Future work includes, but it is not limited to:

    • Observed relationships between climate, human and natural systems (including extreme events);
    • Social institutions and governance systems;
    • Economics of action and inaction;
    • Assets and capacities to support climate resilience;
    • Regulatory risks, climate services and standards;
    • Effective adaptation strategies in communities, infrastructures, and ecosystems;
    • Financial mechanisms and assessment tools for climate-resilient investments;
    • Measures to safeguard critical infrastructure and enhance climate-resilient land use and urban planning;

  2. Research how different climate risk management methods and frameworks account for:

    • Vulnerability, exposure and adaptive capacity;
    • Maladaptation;
    • Transformational adaptation;
    • Institutional arrangements for adaptation, disaster risk reduction and sustainable development;
    • Metrics for tracking and monitoring adaptation;
    • Effectiveness of climate policies, governance structures, and policy coherence;
    • Equitable and just outcomes;
    • Financial decision-making processes, including evaluating and valuing impacts, green taxonomy, and sustainability finance;

  3. Co-develop advanced modelling, scenarios, predictive tools and platforms, to provide a better understanding of how climate change will impact different regions and sectors, while supporting evidence-based and reliable decision-making by policymakers, businesses, and communities.
