André Conceição Pereira holds a BSc. in Biology and MSc. in Applied Microbiology by Faculdade de Ciências, University of Lisbon. His MSc. dissertation, under the supervision of Mónica V. Cunha, was devoted to the theme “Understanding the cross-talk between microbiota, hostfitness, and the environment using Egyptian Mongoose (Herpestes ichneumon) as a model".
In 2018, he started his Ph.D. studies with in the Conservation in Socio-Ecological Systems (CSES) - Landscape Epidemiology and Wildlife Diseases Subgroup of CE3C. He is dedicated to the project "Incorporating the genomic signature of environmental Mycobacterium bovis into transmission models of animal tuberculosis under a phylodynamics conceptual framework", under the supervision of Prof. Mónica V. Cunha (Ph.D.). The project aims are: (1) the development of a breakthrough methodology that allows detection, identification, and sorting of viable environmental Mycobacterium bovis, the etiological agent of animal tuberculosis (TB); (2) whole-genome amplification and sequencing of recovered bacteria; (3) incorporation of environmental M.bovis phylodynamics,in parallel with clinical M.bovis isolates’, into eco-epidemiological models of animal TB. Mechanistic insight into the environmental component of infection will be valuable to fully understand its weight in disease maintenance and inform control choices.
