Plant Biotechnology uses biological systems with the aim of evaluating, modifying and optimizing plant production capacity, analyzing plant-environment relationships in their broadest sense, and obtaining natural plant resources with economic interest, in a sustainable manner. Using various tools and in broad collaborative activity, both intra- and inter-institutional, national and international, we addressed different topics in plant biotechnology, of which three thematic areas stand out, due to their socioeconomic national relevance: plant-environment relationship, quality control and circular economy.
Based on the available skills, which are transversal to other areas, the future scientific goal involves, among others, 1) exploring plant resources with environmental and agri-food applications (Green Biotechnology) and/or in the health sector (Red Biotechnology), 2) recognizing the impact of climate change on plant-environment interactions, taking as a model, medicinal and aromatic plants (MAP), non-timber forest products (e.g. honey and other derived products), and/or forest pests such as pine wilt disease (PWD).
