Nadito Jesus Pina Barbosa
PhD StudentNadito Jesus Pina Barbosa is conducting a Ph.D. in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution by the University of Lisbon starting in 2025 within the Behavioural Ecology and Conservation Research Group of CE3C. He is conducting the project "The potential of acoustics for monitoring biodiversity in small island developing states - the example of Cabo Verde", under the supervision of Ricardo Lopes co-supervision of Samir Martins. Nadito Barbosa Ph.D. project aims are: we intend to prove the potential of acoustic analysis of biodiversity in Cabo Verde, to optimize a robust and integrated monitoring of biodiversity based on acoustic recordings in Cabo Verde.
The main objectives are:
1. Spatial quantification of the distribution of the main terrestrial birds and bats in Cabo Verde, using the massive data obtained with a network of acoustic recorders and the identification of species using machine learning algorithms.
2. Quantification of soundscapes, by calculating indexes that quantify the various dimensions of sound diversity, including the anthropogenic component, important for monitoring global environmental changes.
3. Specific case studies, focused on a particular issue, namely: a. Distribution of exotic populations of Green Monkey Cercopithecus aetiopus and African Common Frog Sclerophrys regularis in Cabo Verde. b. Monitoring the nesting of the critically endangered population of the Red Heron Ardea purpurea in Cabo Verde.
