Juan Pablo Cancela is conducting a Ph.D. in Ecological entomology by the University of the Azores starting in 2020 within the Plant-Soil ecology and Island Biodiversity, Biogeography & Conservation groups of CE3C. He is conducting the project "Arthropod assemblage response to nitrogen pollution in Mediterranean shrublands", under the supervision of Paulo A.V. Borgues (University of the Azores/CE3C), Teresa Dias (FCULl/CE3C) and Luisa Carvalheiro (University of Goiás/CE3C).
Juan Pablo's Ph.D. project aims are:
- To evaluate how N-pollution affects plant-arthropod interactions (potentially affecting ecosystem functioning);
- To detect N-induced changes in plant and arthropod physiology by using the natural abundance of N stable isotopes;
- To identify species or functional groups that can be used as environmental indicators of N-pollution in similar Mediterranean ecosystem areas.
