Paula Lopes is conducting a Ph.D. in BioDiv Programme by the University of Lisbon, starting in 2022. She is conducting the project "Ecological and economic services provided by insectivorous birds and bats on West African rice fields", under the supervision of Professors Ana Rainho and Jorge Palmeirim.
She will evaluate (a) the trait-dependent responses of birds and bats to rice growth stage, season and forest distance; (b) the seasonal changes in the diet of birds and bats foraging in rice fields; (c) how landscape features affect bird diversity in rice fields and (d) the benefit of pest-insect predation services provided by bats and birds in rice production. This study will support landscape management recommendations promoting the rice insect-pest suppression services birds, and bats provide.
