I received a PhD in Biology, specializing in Microbiology from the University of Lisbon in 2008. I currently work in the area of water and sand quality, with the aim of evaluating and understanding the effects of biological contaminants (bacteria, viruses and cyanotoxins), in order to safeguard the human health. In recent years I have been dedicated to researching the biological origin of sources of fecal contamination, mainly in bathing spaces, using the Microbiology Source Tracking (MST) tool.
I have recently became the National Representative of the Competent Authority (INSA) of the EU-WISH Joint Action "EU4H-2023-JA-02: to enhance, extend and consolidate wastewater surveillance for public health (HERA)", with a funding of 530 105 €.82 for Portugal (Nov 2023/Oct 2026).
My current research is guided by three overarching objectives: use of Molecular Biology in Environmental Health, namely in water and sand quality and in Wastewater surveillance as an early warning system for Public Health.
