My formal education is in Biology and Applied Statistics. In 1991 I received a Ph.D. on marine ecology by the Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. In the mid-1990’s I became interested in the dynamics of infectious diseases, their control by vaccination, and on the broader subject of Epidemiology. I started a (still ongoing) collaboration with the Portuguese health authority (DGS) and, in 1998, I was one of the founding members of the Portuguese NITAG (national immunization technical advisory group).
My most relevant contributions, as a NITAG member, were on the vaccination and control of measles, human papilloma virus (HPV), whooping cough, tuberculosis, and COVID-19. Currently I have been focused on the epidemiological impact of the introduction of vaccination for the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in the Portuguese adult population. At the same time, I hold a position as professor of Epidemiology at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon.
