João Rebelo is conducting a Ph.D. in Biology at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon starting in 2021 within the Evolutionary Ecology of Microorganisms group of CE3C. He is conducting the project “Influence of plasmid transfer on plasmid evolution and maintenance”, under the supervision of Francisco Dionísio (CE3C) and Francisca Monteiro (CE3C).
João Rebelo's Ph.D. project aims are: (1) Understand the maintenance of plasmids in nature despite their cost to bacteria. A mixed approach of experiments and computational models will be used to evaluate the hypothesis that plasmids are used as weapons in bacterial competition; (2) Study the damage that plasmid-bearing bacteria inflict on other bacteria during conjugation.
