Teresa L. Santos is conducting a Ph.D. in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution (BIODIV), at the University of Lisbon starting in 2018 within the Wildlife Genetics research group of CE3C. She is conducting the project, entitled “Impacts of anthropogenic pressure on genetic and phenotypic diversity of the African elephant (Loxodonta africana) in southern Africa”, under the supervision of Professor Carlos Fernandes (CE3C), Hannah Mumby (University of Hong Kong) and Tom Gilbert (University of Copenhagen).
Her project aims to assess (1) genomic diversity and structure of elephants in southern Africa, (2) genomic tools for ivory provenance identification, and (3) potential phenotypic impacts of legal hunting. Her research interests are molecular ecology, population genetics, conservation biology, and social change during the biodiversity crisis.
