Diogo Dias is conducting a Ph.D. in ecology of global changes by the University of Lisbon starting in 2023 within the Freshwater and Invasion Biology group of CE3C. He is conducting the project European perch (Perca fluviatilis) on a newly invaded area: Spread, traits, impacts and management, under the supervision of Maria Filomena Magalhães, CE3C; Filipe Ribeiro, MARE; Martin Cech, Czech Academy of Sciences. Diogo's Ph.D. project aims are:
- Evaluate the current distribution of European perch in Portugal and the potential pathways for its dispersal;
- Assess the affinity of fishermen to European perch and their role as a dispersal agent;
- Understand the biological traits of European perch in Portuguese freshwaters in relation to native perch populations (Czech Republic) and determine how can this relate to the species' invasion success;
- Evaluate how does the invasion of European perch impact the local fish communities and ecosystems and what are the potential mechanisms driving these impacts;
- Assess the current state of the Portuguese perch populations, and how can future dispersion and impacts be anticipated;
- Deliberate the most effective management approaches for different types of systems (e.g. reservoirs vs open systems), and how can ecologically-based prevention and control options be implemented on a broader scale.
