I received a Ph.D. in Biology (Technological Biology) from the University of Lisbon in 1992 and I am currently leading Plant Biotechnology group of CE3C. I am a professor of Natural Plant Resources and Cell Biology at the University of Lisbon. My research focuses on Plant Biotechnology, Plant Natural Resources, Plant In Vitro Culture, and Bioactive Compounds. Using various tools and in broad collaborative activity, intra- and inter-institutional, with national and foreign institutions, I have been involved in plant in vitro culture and co-culture, using micropropagation, shoots and hairy root cultures as models; in the chemical characterization of medicinal and aromatic plants, fruits, bryophytes, algae, honey and other beekeeping products; in the evaluation of bioactive natural products, and plant-environment relationship.
My current and future research is driven by three overarching objectives: the characterization of host–pathogen–vector interactions, quality control, and circular economy, for the valorisation of resources obtained from medicinal and aromatic plants (MAP) or from underutilized agroforest biomass with agroforestry, cosmetic and pharmacological properties.
