Duncan Crowley

I am an Irish architect exploring community-led ecocities in Lisbon. A climate activist for over a quarter-century, my work builds bridges between different communities, languages, movements, and peoples.

I graduated as an architect in 2005 from Technological University Dublin and attained my Masters in Environment and Development from the Federal University of Parana (UFPR) in 2015, in Curitiba, Brazil, in a multidisciplinary course focusing on Urban Sustainability and Citizen Participation. I am living in Portugal since 2018, doing an action research PhD in Architecture of Contemporary Metropolitan Territories at ISCTE University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL), under the supervision of Teresa Marat-Mendes, Professor of Architecture and Urbanism at ISCTE and Roberto Falanga, Assistant Researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon (ICS). 

I am an External Collaborator with PSE at CE3C at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL) since 2019 working on the European Horizon project Urban Arenas for Sustainable and Just Cities (UrbanA). I am also an assistant researcher in the Cities and Territories research group of DINÂMIA'CET (Centre for Socioeconomic and Territorial Studies) at ISCTE. 

I represented FCUL in the European Network for Community-Led Initiatives on Climate Change and Sustainability (ECOLISE), was elected Co-president (2021-2022) and worked on a number of European projects: Horizon; Female-Led Innovation in Agriculture and Rural Areas (FLIARA) & Erasmus+; We Are Voices of Ecology (WAVE), Regenerative Communities for All (REGEN4ALL) & Ecovillage Transition in Action (ETiA). The last 2 in collaboration with the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN). I am also active in Portuguese Regenerative and Degrowth movements.
