I received a Ph.D. in Sciences from the University of Paris-Sud in 1995 and the equivalence to the PhD degree from the University of Lisbon in October 1996. I am currently working in the Plant Soil Ecology research group of CE3C. I am also a professor of Microbiology and Ecosystem Engineering at the University of Lisbon.
My research area is Soil Microbiology, and focuses soil thermophilic bacteria and plant-rhizobacteria interactions, namely the characterization of beneficial bacteria for plant tolerance to abiotic stresses. For many years I have been involved in the study of soil bacteria, both aerobic and anaerobic. My current research is driven by three overarching objectives: to understand the physiology of soil thermophilic bacteria in the rhizosphere and in the bulk soil, to study their influence on the plant physiology, and to establish and study consortia comprising soil thermophilic and mesophilic beneficial bacteria.
