My research focuses on ecology, conservation biology and functional diversity of invertebrates while having an interest in the development of novel methods and computational tools. For many years I have been involved in spider and insect conservation research using as model system islands, caves and other habitat types of special conservation concern. I was founder and chair of the Spider & Scorpion Specialist Group of the IUCN and involved in numerous conservation projects throughout the world. My current research is driven by three overarching objectives: automating extinction risk assessments, developing novel methods in functional ecology and studying and protecting island and cave environments and their inhabitants.
