Within CE3C, the Machine Learning in Ecology group aims to lead advancements in computational ecology and conservation.

We have forged robust collaborations with other groups like Island Biodiversity, Biogeography & Conservation, Tropical and Mediterranean Biodiversity, System Ecology, Urban Ecology, Restoration Ecology and Climate Risk Management, while actively establishing partnerships with numerous others.

Our primary goal is to innovate in phylogenetic and functional ecology, pioneering advanced methods.

We specialise in software and database development and leverage our expertise in applying machine learning to these critical domains.

Additionally, our contributions extend to environmental policy, spanning from Red Listing and spatial prioritisation to wildlife trade. Engaged in two EU Horizon projects centred on sustainable agriculture in Europe and Africa, we are committed to applying our knowledge and fostering synergies with collaborative laboratories such as Food4Sustainability (PT) and multiple private enterprises, including NatureMetrics (UK).

As one of the rare research groups in Portugal specialising in invertebrate ecology, conservation, and taxonomy, we remain dedicated to promoting these taxa as fundamental models for research across all levels in the country.
