I received a Ph.D. in Animal Science and Technology from the University of Lisbon in 2005. I am a professor of Microbiology at the Department of Animal Health, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Lisbon (FMV-ULisbon). My research focuses on One Health, clinical veterinary bacteriology, bacterial biofilms, antimicrobial resistance, food safety, wildlife diseases and mycology. I am an EBVS® European Specialist in Veterinary Microbiology, being currently responsible for two diagnostic laboratories of FMV-ULisbon, the Laboratory of Bacteriology and the Laboratory of Mycology.
My current research is driven by three overarching objectives: 1) Development of novel therapeutic strategies aiming to control bacterial infections in human and veterinary medicine; 2) Assessment of antimicrobial resistance prevalence in LMI countries; 3) Evaluation of the role of wildlife as sentinels for antimicrobial resistance.
