ResearcherI received a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences (specialization in Microbiology) from the New University of Lisbon in 2016. I am currently a researcher at iXLab – Inovação para a Resiliência Biológica Nacional, a collaborative initiative led by the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Lisbon and the Portuguese Army, being also part of the Biological Resilience research group from CE3C.
My research focuses on the timely detection, identification, and mitigation of potential biological threats, as well as the development and application of molecular protocols. I also oversee the Genomics and Sequencing Services within FCUL. Previously, I worked as an Associate Scientist at the Food Safety & Microbiology Lab of the Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica (iBET), where I contributed to various projects, being the PI of three, mainly focused on characterizing viromes in food matrices such as fish, water, bivalves, and red fruits. For several years, I have been involved in food safety and environmental microbiology research, using aquatic and food-related samples as model systems for virome and pathogen detection.
My current research is driven by three overarching objectives:
- Refining molecular diagnostics for rapid detection of emerging biological threats.
- Advancing genomics and sequencing methodologies to enhance biosecurity and outbreak response.
- Exploring microbial communities in diverse environments contributing to public health strategies.
